Guest Speaker Shatters Stereotypes of People with Disabilities

Nearly 19 percent of Americans have a disability, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2010 report. What is life like for them?

To help their peers answer that question, Lindsey R. ‘18 and Kayla P. ’18 formed the Disabilities Awareness Club. Members learn what true inclusion of people with disabilities means, and explore how to implement inclusion at all school programs.

At the club’s opening meeting, National Organization of Parents of Blind Children of Maryland President Mrs. Melissa Riccobono offered club members insight into the daily life of a person who is blind. Mrs. Riccobono, who is also an educational consultant for Discovery Toys, shared her experiences growing up with blindness, described the tools and resources she uses at work and at home, and inspired the students to appreciate the blessings they experience every day.

In thanking Mrs. Riccobono for this transformative experience, club members shared how moved they were not only by her story, but also by her accomplishments.

"She helped me see blindness not as a disability, but as an obstacle,” noted Talia Z. ’18, who learned that while we all have obstacles to overcome, they should not prevent us from living the lives we want. Echoed Rebecca G. ’18, “She has completely shattered the stereotype that because of her disability, she couldn't succeed. She's so successful and such an amazing role model."

“You have left a huge impact on all of us in the Disability Awareness Club and for that we will be forever grateful,” concluded Lindsey and Kayla. “You have opened our eyes to new perspectives and…we will forever remember your story, your passion, and your powerful words.”
