In Memorium...and in Gratitude

By: Noah A. '13
Tehilim tells us that the life of a person is 70 years. So, it is the lifespan of one person which separates us here in Beth Tfiloh from the horrors of the Shoah. Seventy years to ask our parents, our teachers, our leaders, ourselves.

How many millions were robbed of their 70 years of life? How many children with dreams of that lifetime ahead saw those dreams replaced with their worst nightmares? How many, not old enough to dream, were lost before they could? How many were taken from the wombs of their mothers only to have their cries silenced by a gunshot?

How much we must treasure those that survived and the worlds that they have gone on to build. How many men, women and children owe their lives to a survivor who dared to escape the clutches of death, who had the audacity to live when Hitler declared that they should die? It is to those spared the fire that we owe our existence and our strength. One question can be asked of us: have we done enough to thank these children who escaped, to bond ourselves to them, our last link to the past?
