Third Grade’s World Tour: Celebration of Immigration

Mrs. Grand’s third graders recently read the story “Angel Child, Dragon Child” about a child that came from Vietnam and the hard time she had adjusting to her new school. That prompted a discussion about what it’s like to be an immigrant coming to a new country and an exploration of the whole immigration process of coming to Ellis Island, integrating the class’s reading and social studies lessons.

To make the lesson more personal, several students’ parents came in to talk to the entire third grade at the Celebration of Immigration. “Our parent guest speakers brought our studies to life,” says Mrs. Grand. “We listened to the real-life stories of our parents who were immigrants and moved to America. Our students recorded the interesting facts they learned from our guests. What a wonderful experience for us all!”

Thank you so much to the following parents who shared their experiences with our entire third grade!
Mr. Levinger, Mr. Lavie, Mr. Baum, Mrs. Evgey, Dr. Melamed (Israel)
Mrs. Maydanich, Mrs. Klaff (Ukraine)
Mrs. Radov (Moldova)
Dr. Noorani, represented by his son who read a letter about Dr. Noorani’s experiences (Iran)
