The Third Annual Sixth Grade Mitzvah Week

Three years ago, BT Middle School launched the Mitzvah Week program, giving sixth graders the opportunity to learn about the mitzvot they are taking on as b’nei mitzvah. By creating their own ritual objects, including tefillin, havdallah candles, mezuzot, challah boards and covers, Kiddush cups, and Shabbat candle sticks – as well as learning about personal safety with Krav Maga lessons, cooking a Shabbat meal and baking challah, the students get a comprehensive look at both important Jewish practices and the meaning behind them.

This year, the girls visited Rosendorff’s Bakery, where they got to braid and take home their own challot, and explored the laws of kashrut through the making of their own chocolate treats. After cooking a traditional Shabbat meal with Mrs. Hefter, the girls brought home samples for their own Shabbat tables. The students reflected on their experiences in their journals, exploring what this weeklong experience meant to them.
