Our seventh grade government class recently completed a unit on the money supply for our economy and the Federal Reserve System. Agent Richard Hudson of the United States Secret Service came to our class this week to talk about the mission of the Secret Service as it relates to the money supply in the United States.
Agent Hudson talked about the dual mission of the Secret Service. We learned that one of the jobs of the Secret Service is to protect the money supply of the United States from counterfeiters. Agent Hudson brought several counterfeit bills that students were allowed to examine. He explained many ways by which a counterfeit bill can be detected. He also shared several stories involving his undercover work in the field.
The Secret Service is also responsible for the protection of certain people in our federal government, including the President of the United States. Agent Hudson talked about being on the protection details in several presidential administrations. His favorite memory about these details involved guarding the president during a visit to the Normandy beaches in France on the anniversary of D-day. Several veterans who actually took part in the landings thanked him for guarding the president. He said that he was humbled by this because they “are the true heroes because they put their lives on the line by storming the beach.” It was a very powerful moment for him.
The seventh grade REALLY enjoyed Agent Hudson’s visit and appreciate his coming to see us!
