High School Internship Fair: Exploring the Possibilities

By Julius L. ‘16
This year, High School Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Rochelle Sullivan, implemented Beth Tfiloh’s first internship fair. Designed to help eleventh grade students explore possible job opportunities and college majors, the fair offered great insight into what types of internships are available to students. With opportunities ranging from doctors’ offices and theaters to Beth Tfiloh’s very own computer lab, students heard captivating and insightful presentations from twelfth grade representatives.

Eleventh grader, Shayna B. ’16, said that she “really benefited from attending the fair” because it helped her decide on “signing up for an internship program this summer.” Working as an intern is a great opportunity to explore specific job opportunities while gaining valuable work experience for college resumes. Like Shayna B., Rachel R. ’16 also said that “the internship fair was extremely helpful” and that “the twelfth graders were prepared to answer questions” and were “willing to coordinate and help me find the right internship program.”

That is exactly the kind of outcome Mrs. Sullivan anticipated. She explains that the internship fair provided “an authentic assessment for the senior internships” and that faculty who attended the program “were very impressed with the experiences and the outstanding quality of the presentations.” She said that the fair enabled students to “get a glimpse into the benefits of internships” and hopes in the future to continue “to broaden the options available to students for their placements” and improve the overall internship experience.

Overall, both students and faculty felt as if the internship fair was an immense success. Not only did it enable them to look ahead into their futures but also discover a possible internship which suits their needs and interests.
