European Vacation: Exploring Geography through Travel

You thought preparing for Pesach was exhausting? Try traveling around all of Europe in just 45 minutes! That’s what Mrs. Perman’s sixth grade class did last week, as the culmination of their studies of geography.

“Throughout the year, the sixth grade has learned about the five themes of geography and how those themes affect where and how people live around the world,” explains Mrs. Perman. “The five themes include movement, location, place, region and human-environment interaction.”

Each student was assigned a European country to research. The students were asked to create a map which displayed the following: their country and its neighbors; major cities; landforms and bodies of water; climatic and agricultural regions; airports; agricultural products and natural resources. “This allowed them to learn about the country through all five themes,” says Mrs. Perman. “Once the information is shared, the students then need to explain how the country’s land, location, and the way in which the inhabitants use the land, affect how people live and with whom they can have trade relationships.”

To celebrate the completion of the project, students set up their displays in the classroom, then embarked on a European vacation where they each “visited” each country. At each stop, the students completed questionnaires, guiding them through the major features of that country, prompting them to discover new information about all the countries of Europe along the way.
