CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
At Beth Jacob Hebrew School at Beth Tfiloh, our essential goal for our students is that they will acquire the skills necessary to be meaningfully engaged in Jewish life. Through their experience at BT, our learners will develop the knowledge, the sense of belonging, the values, and the skills and habits to make daily decisions guided by Jewish teaching, living lives steeped in the ideas, practices, and community that make up the Jewish tradition. By nurturing our students, they can grow into adulthood rooted in their personal journeys in the lessons of Judaism.

Through their encounters and exploration of key concepts, texts, and experiences of Jewish life, our students will learn to apply Torah to daily life. Subject areas include:
• Shabbat and Chagim (Jewish Holidays and Holy Days)
• Torah Study
• Mitzvot and Middot (Jewish practices and values)
• Israel - land, people, and history
• Ivrit (Hebrew language)
• Tefillah (lrayer)
• Jewish history

Our spiral curriculum allows students to approach topics in ways that are developmentally appropriate and return to them over their school career in greater complexity, reinforcing previous learning and increasing the depth of their mastery of a given subject.

For example, a Gan (Kindergarten) student will first learn about Shabbat as a special celebration honoring God’s rest at the conclusion of Creation. In future years, that same student will learn about and experience:
• The Shabbat Friday night table rituals
• Havdalah
• Shabbat morning community and Torah study
• Shabbat prayers
• Aspects of traditional observance
• The rituals and skills of participating in the Torah Service — a role essential for celebrating Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

In addition, each grade level will have a theme for their learning, framing their approach to their material and to our goal of applying Torah to daily life.
