Beth Tfiloh Honors Louise and Morton J. (z"l) Macks’s Commitment to Jewish Education

“For Mordechai was a great man among the Jews… he sought the good of his people and spoke for the welfare of all.” –Megillat Esther 10:3

Like the hero of the Purim story, Morty Macks (whose Hebrew name was Mordechai) was a champion of Jewish education in Baltimore. At the recent ceremony honoring both Morty and his wife, Louise, BT Director of Education Mrs. Zipora Schorr reflected on the family’s passion for and commitment to Jewish education, and Morty’s role as a founder and president of Beth Tfiloh’s High School.

“There’s nothing that Morty believed in more than the oneness of Klal Yisrael,” explained Mrs. Schorr. “He believed that children from one end of the Jewish spectrum to the other end should study Torah together; that was his mission and it is ours.”

“Morty was unique. He never forgot his roots,” shared Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg, rabbi of Beth Tfiloh Congregation and Dean of BT High School. “He never forgot his people. He simply loved to give of himself. And he gave so much!”

For Morty Macks, whose Hebrew name was Mordechai, Jewish denominational affiliation wasn’t important. “All that mattered was being Jewish and being educated Jewishly!” said Rabbi Wohlberg.

The Macks name now appears above the High School entrance, a testament to the monumental philanthropic support that made the High School possible. Morty’s instrumental role in establishing the High School and his visionary leadership are memorialized on a plaque in the High School lobby. It reads:
