BT Math Team Brings Home the Gold

After five hours of intense competition, Beth Tfiloh High School's Math Team won the gold medal at the Math Majors of America Tournament for High Schools on Yale University's campus. The team of Noah F. ‘18, Zach L. ‘18, Yonathan M. ‘18, Eitan M. ‘19, Eli S. ‘18, and Ethan T. ‘20 represented the Warriors against six other teams from Connecticut to Dallas.

The first round was the individual competition. Students had 75 minutes to answers 12 questions that began with some challenging questions, increasing in difficulty until the questions became insanely difficult to complete. After the judges computed the scores, finalists Eitan and Eli both progressed to the tiebreaker round, making BT the only team represented by two competitors in that round. At the end of the tiebreaker round, Eli finished in fourth place and Eitan was awarded fifth place overall.

The second round was the mixer round, with teams comprised of students from different schools. This gave students an opportunity to work with students who may view problems from a different perspective. Noah, Yonathan, and Zach were all members of the top three teams that were given awards.

The last round of the day was the team round. Each school was given the first set of three questions, each worth one point. Teams could take as long as needed on any set of three questions, but the point value and difficulty of each packet increased for each round. The scores were kept in real time on the large monitor at the front of the room. Each time a team submitted a set of questions the updated results were displayed. BT was in second place until they submitted all questions correct in round four.

Other teams made valiant runs at the end to try to overtake the warriors, but was time ran out, the warriors still stood atop the leader board. Noah, Zach, Yonathan, Eitan, Eli and Ethan all contributed to the team victory. They seem to thoroughly enjoy working on challenging math questions for nearly five hours in a pressure situation. Congratulations to all team members on a great tournament!
