Joseph Schwartz

Joseph Schwartz is unquestionably a BT “regular.” His parents, Stacy and Louis Schwartz, joined BT when he was in PreSchool “to provide me with a Jewish education and identity, with an equal focus on secular studies. They knew that Beth Tfiloh would provide us with a warm, nurturing, environment to grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually,” said Joe. After grad-uating from BT in 2012, Joe became a BT member in his own right where he regularly attends Shabbat services, and helps to lead Youth Services.

A 2016 graduate of the University of Maryland, Joseph works for Under Armour where he is a member of the Global Sourcing team which oversees the entire footwear production process.

Since his Junior year at BT, Joe has been involved in the Baltimore County Fire Department, where he currently volunteers at both Chestnut Ridge and Pikesville, as both a Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician. Joseph especially values the comradery and friendship amongst the FD community as well as the opportunity to work with people from different backgrounds.

One of Joe’s most unique BT memories came on his 2012 Senior trip to Poland and Israel, at the Auschwitz II-Birkenau death camp. “Our last stop in the camp was at the Pond of Ashes, where the ashes of tens of thousands of victims remain. There, led by Mrs. Schorr, our class said Kaddish and joined in song, before beginning the long walk out of the camp. As we walked, I found myself in a deep conversation with my good friend Ian Lever. While we reflected on our experiences, the focus of our conversation quickly shifted to the 1.1 million Jews who had once stood on this same ground, unable to walk out. We decided to backtrack slightly, returning to the very end of the iconic train tracks that led into the camp. We resumed the walk out of the camp, this time however, we focused on taking a step on each railroad tie, honoring the memories of all the victims who never left, and then making the conscious decision to leave feeling empowered and proud rather than hopeless and depressed. This conversation continued the entire way out of the camp, where we reunited with the grade, davened Mincha, and boarded the bus to the airport….we were going to Israel!”
