Fourth Grade Entrepreneurs Build Skills Through Business Development

BT fourth grade classrooms transformed into business incubators in the weeks leading up to winter break. Students first read both fiction and non-fiction stories about business development and corporate social responsibility. Next, the students established their own business goals and developed detailed plans outlining how they would meet the needs of the community and reach their goals.

Part of their planning addressed how their businesses would give back to their communities – either through offering free services or giving a charitable donation for each sale or profit margin. Along the way, the students learned about marketing and advertising strategies, graphic design and video production, and other technological skills vital to doing business.

“The goal of the business fair is to make our learning more exciting and more meaningful to the students,” explained fourth grade teacher Morah Rivka Bresler. “The business fair was a way for the students to experience what they read through a hands-on project in which they had to follow the steps to starting a business and decide how they would give back charitably.”

At their business fair, these enterprising students shared their ideas with their peers and fellow captains of industry. Each CEO proudly displayed his or her sign, featuring their self-designed logos, distributed business cards and explained how their business could serve their friends’ needs.

Some of the proposed businesses included: bakeries, sporting goods stores, athletic recreational programs, child care services, pet care services, art galleries, video game and book stores, modeling and acting training schools, games and toy stores, cosmetic artist services, party planning services, dance studios…and more.

We look forward to patronizing our young entrepreneurs businesses in the near future!
