Observing a Yahrzeit

The Beth Tfiloh Memorial Room
Beth Tfiloh Congregation maintains yahrzeit records for relatives of all members, and for deceased members. The Congregation sends yahrzeit notices to members to remind them of the date of upcoming yahrzeits and to provide them with a variety of meaningful opportunities to observe the yahrzeit.

Time honored yahrzeit traditions include lighting a candle on the evening when the yahrzeit begins, attending services on the evening (Maariv), mornng (Shacharit) and afternoon (Mincha) of the yahrzeit to recite the Mourner's Kaddish, and giving tzedakah in memory of loved ones.

Meaningful ways to observe a yahrzeit at Beth Tfiloh include the following:
  • Attend services and recite the Mourner's Kaddish
  • Have a member of the family receive an alliyah in shul in honor of the Yahrzeit
  • Have a memorial prayer recited on the yahrzeit date
  • Make a donation to the Yahrzeit Fund in memory of a beloved relative
  • Sponsor a breakfast following the daily morning minyan
  • Sponsor a Seudah Shlishit, the third Shabbat meal
  • Purchase a memorial plaque in our Memorial Room
To indicate your interest in any of these options, please use the form below or contact Eve Kresin Steinberg at 410-486-1900.

Sponsoring the Seudah Shelishit

SEUDAH SHELISHIT is the third Shabbat meal that is served each week approximately 90 minutes before Shabbat concludes. This light meal consists of salads, kugels, soft drinks, tea, coffee, and pastries. Other menu choices may be available as well.

When a family sponsors this meal in memory of a beloved relative, this information is included in our weekly Shabbat handout and monthly Beth Tfiloh Bulletin, and is announced on Shabbat afternoon at the conclusion of the Mincha (afternoon) service. In addition, during this meal one of our rabbis will make a few remarks about the sponsoring family, or a family member may speak if they desire.

In this way, we honor our departed loved ones and keep their memories alive.
