Beginning the Lifelong Learning of the Arts

Beth Tfiloh’s Creative Arts Department provides a far-ranging curriculum in creative and performing arts including visual arts, instrumental and choral music, dance, music theory, film and digital video editing, technical theater, and stage craft. Our outstanding Middle and High School theater productions have played to sell-out crowds and our High School productions have earned a growing list of awards from the cappies student theater review program and the Baltimore Theater Awards Program.

The curriculum and philosophy of Beth Tfiloh Creative Arts Department provides a comprehensive foundation of Arts education which produces a “well rounded” creative student and begins the journey of lifelong learning in the Arts. The Maryland State Essential Learner Outcomes and Indicators forms the basis for our Creative Arts curriculum. Each child is encouraged to reach his or her own individual potential at his or her own pace.

Beth Tfiloh’s music and visual art programs encompass the five National Arts Standards Learning goals:

  • Lower School

    Vocal & Instrumental Music - Throughout the Lower School years, students develop core skills in vocal music utilizing the concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony, form, expression, vocabulary and listening skills. By performing, creating and describing music, each student will learn to appreciate Jewish, American and Classical music. Classes meet with a music specialist once per week and also meet weekly for a Kabbalat Shabbat sing-a-long. In addition, contemporary and traditional Jewish songs are taught, along with liturgy, Shabbat songs, and American songs.

    In early grades, students learn a growing repertoire of Jewish music in both Hebrew and English. The students prepare for such specific performance opportunities as the First Grade Siddur Ceremony, the Second Grade Chumash and Third Grade Midot Presentations. Additional highlights include performances by the Fourth Grade Choir, a Lower School Production, Synagogue performances, Grandparent’s Day Presentation and performances for community events.

    Visual Arts - Lower School students are exposed to a wide variety of artistic experiences with different media, including drawing, painting, collage, sculpture and clay printing. Through this exposure, students learn the proper use of a variety of tools. Throughout the grades, students become familiar with famous artists and frequently work in their style.
  • Middle School

    The Middle School arts curriculum includes instrumental music, chorus, dance, theatre, visual art and art history. Students also have a variety of available performance opportunities both through co-curricular programs and extra-curricular activities, including two full-scale musicals: one for combined 6th, 7th, and 8th grade and one specifically for 5th grade students.   • High School

    The High School arts curriculum provides a comprehensive curriculum in the creative and performing arts, including visual arts, art history, instrumental and choral music, and music theory. Students may also choose from a variety of extra-curricular vocal groups, instrumental ensembles and theatre projects that give performances throughout the school year, including a dramatic or comedic performance in the fall and a full-scale musical production in the winter, featuring student designed and built sets, lighting and sound.
