Join us as we honor the legacy of Torah study in the merit of Sandy Vogel z"l with an evening of lively Beit midrash-style learning. Topic: How Did Chanukah Become a Jewish Holiday? Chanukah is the only holiday that commemorates an event which most Jews did not personally witness. How then was it established as a holiday to be observed by all Jews? This lecture will explore the earliest Jewish sources which mention Chanukah: letters written by Jews in the Land of Israel to Jews living in Egypt, asking them to observe the holiday. These and other ancient letters clarify how Chanukah became a holiday widely observed by all Jews - and in the process a flashpoint of debate regarding the meaning of the diaspora.
