BT in the AM

Trimester 2:  Dec. 18. Jan. 8, 22, 29, Feb. 5, 12
Class 1: Critical Societal Issues on the Jewish World
9:30-10:20 am, facilitator: Phil Jacobs

In this course we will address contemporary issues ranging from Jewish perspectives on gun ownership to the removal of books such as “Maus” and “The Diary of Anne Frank” from library shelves. We will discuss what is at stake for the Jewish community in upcoming political campaigns, including the 2024 Presidential election and how that plays out for the U.S. and Israel.  Join Phil Jacobs, a long-time BT-in-the-AM teacher, Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community High School Jewish History instructor and former Baltimore Jewish Times Editor-in-Chief for an informative, balanced and lively series of dialogues.

Class 2: Highlights in the Haftara
10:30-11:30 am, facilitator: Dr. Zipora Schorr

Every parsha in the Torah is read with a Haftarah, a companion chapter from the Books of the Prophets, which has a powerful message from which we can learn important life lessons. This course will provide an opportunity to study the Haftarah each week, learn its context and connection to the parsha, and extract the moral dilemmas inherent in each of the narratives that provide an ancient backdrop for contemporary issues. You will never hear the Haftarah the same way again!
