Support Services

Lower School

We ensure that the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral well-being of each child is being addressed and fostered. The development of character skills, including resilience, self-control, self-regulation, empathy, assertion and creative problem-solving are at the heart of the Lower School experience.

Middle School

Middle School students learn how to be responsible for themselves and others. Through their daily interactions with peers and teachers and carefully designed programs, Middle School students develop a sense of responsibility for themselves by building self-awareness and resilience and practice self-regulation and self-advocacy. They cultivate responsibility towards others by practicing kindness and Derech Eretz for children and adults, honing empathetic thinking, and building effective communication and healthy conflict resolution skills.

High School

Our High School program provides additional resources that address the individual student’s educational and social/emotional needs. We support the whole student, building a sense of fulfillment and encouraging personal growth through comprehensive academic, social, and emotional support services.  Through a program that provides counseling, supervision, and skill development, students can develop skills and character traits necessary to navigate life beyond high school.

Our Mission

Each Beth Tfiloh student is encouraged to reach his or her full potential. The school embraces a range of learning styles and has an academic support program and enrichment opportunities along with social and emotional support in every division.

  • Lower School Academic Support

The Lower School’s Director of Teaching and Learning oversees the implementation of the Responsive Classroom approach in our classrooms. Responsive Classroom emphasizes proactively teaching social, emotional, and academic learning within our classrooms. Our love for and attention to each student enables teachers to understand and best support each child’s strengths and needs. Our teachers often use smaller group learning to provide more individualized attention to students who either need more help or enrichment.
  • Middle School Learning Lab

Our Middle School learning specialist oversees support services ranging from individualized educational curricula in specific subjects with one-on-one instruction, to participation in an academic support program with group instruction. Learning specialists develop accommodation plans for both students receiving direct services as well as those requiring classroom modifications. Our learning specialist and resource teachers advocate for students receiving academic support, acting as liaisons between teachers, students, and parents to ensure each student’s success.
  • High School Academic Support Program

Directed by a full-time specialist, the Academic Support Program staff provides counseling, supervision, and skill development to qualifying students with specific learning differences. Our specialists work with students, parents, and teachers to oversee and coordinate individualized academic programs for students who require in-house and/or outside tutoring support to assist with content proficiency or organization and study skills. The ASP staff enhance parent-teacher-tutor communication, provide valuable workshops for all parents on topics relating to learning differences, and support the entire High School faculty through ongoing professional development programs in the areas of brain-based teaching methods and learning styles. Our Learning Center is a valuable resource for all High School students, on an ongoing or as-needed basis.

  • Lower School

We ensure that the academic, social, emotional and behavioral wellbeing of each child is being addressed and fostered. The development of character skills, including resilience, self-control, self-regulation, empathy, assertion and creative problem-solving are at the heart of the Lower School experience.  To this end, the Lower School Principal oversees the implementation of the Responsive Classroom approach in our classrooms, ensuring that social, emotional, and academic learning are all proactively and synchronously taught within our classrooms.
  • Middle School

Our Middle School counselor meets regularly with administrators, teachers, and parents to assess each student’s social, emotional, and academic needs and provide guidance on age-appropriate topics and issues. The counselor supports individual students’ unique needs, works with small groups of students to develop, and use social skills and conflict resolution strategies, and facilitates programming that focuses on relevant issues and overall wellness.
  • High School

Our High School guidance counselor, together with grade advisors and the administration, supports the development of the skills and character traits necessary to navigate life beyond high school. Topics and issues may include developing self-awareness, self-advocacy, healthy decision making, independence, goal-oriented behavior, problem solving, navigating friendships, forming, and maintaining relationships as well as having the skills and resources to cope with stressors. The counselor, who is a member High School Crisis Intervention team, meets regularly with grade advisers to monitor each student’s social-emotional progress; consults with individual students and/or parents on an as-needed basis to address issues such as stress, anxiety, and relationships; educates parents about issues such as fostering independence, preventing risky behaviors, and forming healthy relationships, managing stress, and preparing for college; provides referrals to and communicates with outside mental health professionals to support the success of individual students.
