SPOTLIGHT 2012: Oh What a Night!
On Wednesday, June 6, the BT family – school parents, students, alumni and faculty, along with Congregation members and community friends – gathered to pay tribute to BT’s most generous benefactor, Mr. Haron Dahan, and celebrate the 25th anniversary of the High School’s founding.
The evening was an astounding success, raising nearly $1.2 million, thanks to the tireless efforts of Spotlight Chairs Sherry and Josh Mauer, Sponsorship Chairs Debbie and Louis Baer, and Ticket Sales Chair Wendy Friedman, along with their legion of devoted of volunteers.
“Tonight we have raised over $950,000 for Spotlight. In addition to his extraodinary gift to Spotlight, Mr. Dahan also matched all new and increased gifts for an additional $230,000 to the Haron Dahan Endowment Fund for Beth Tfiloh – totaling almost $1.2 million,” announced Director of Education Mrs. Zipora Schorr in her remarks.
The evening’s honoree, Mr. Haron Dahan, is an individual whose name is synonymous around the world with generosity and education. “Tonight we honor [Mr. Dahan] for the gift he has given us … not his money, but his name,” remarked Rabbi Wohlberg. “He has given us the greatest gift of all: the keser shem tov – the crown of a good name. Through his generosity he has assured that there will be a Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School for generations to come.”
The evening also commemorated the founding of the Beth Tfiloh High School 25 years ago. “From humble beginnings — 22 kids in a little home on Old Forest Road — we have grown into a powerhouse that has produced 1,100 alumni… carrying with them the unique blend of Judaism that Rabbi Wohlberg says is not Judaism light – but Judaism right: a Judaism that has no labels but mentchlichkeit, and decency, compassion and kindness, commitment and care – Judaism with joy,” expressed Mrs. Schorr.
