To mark the 100th day of school, many teachers ask students to bring in 100 of a certain item so they can visualize how much 100 really is. For our second graders, the 100th day of school was a chance to perform an act of chessed—of caring for those in need in our community.
“I’ve done ‘100th day of school’ celebrations in both Kindergarten and first grade classes,” comments second grade teacher Ms. Dani Levin, “But for second grade, I thought we needed to something more meaningful. I thought it would be nice to do something to help the homeless, like 100 packing lunches for residents at Hannah More Women and Children’s Shelter.”
Ms. Levin approached her fellow second grade teachers, Mrs. Stacy Lunenfeld and Mrs. Irina Diamond, to fully develop this program. “We worked together to coordinate this program where our students first prepare the bagels and cream cheese, then decorate each bag with special messages to make the recipients smile, such as ‘smile!’ and ‘I hope you enjoy your lunch!’”
Beth Tfiloh has a long-standing partnership with Hannah More. In conjunction with Beth Tfiloh Congregation’s social action committee, BT Cares, school families in every division send in lunches twice a month to be delivered to residents there. The lunches the second graders packed will be delivered with the school-wide collection today.
“Beth Tfiloh is a tight-knit community where ‘chessed,’ or acts of kindness, are such an integral part of our lives every day,” notes Ms. Levin. “As teachers, we want the children to learn and explore how to be a member of the community, so we thought that by doing a project like this, the children would realize the importance of a mitzvah and how even at 8 years-old they can make a positive difference in someone's day.”
