Class 1: 9:30-10:25 - Rabbi Dr. Dovid Katz
Survive or Thrive? A Birds-Eye View of the History of the Jewish People

Judaism is the ultimate historical religion. To be Jewish is to be familiar with a certain narrative, the Jewish narrative. Unfortunately, too many Jews are unfamiliar with their own narrative and do not know the details of who they are. This course will introduce students to the story of a people who successfully struggled to maintain their distinct identity despite the absence of a state, a church, or geographical contiguity.

Bio: Rabbi Dr. Dovid Katz is the Rav of Congregation Beth Abraham “Hertzberg’s” Shul in Baltimore and a Professor of Jewish history at Johns Hopkins University. He is lauded for his extensive knowledge of Jewish history and his engaging and insightful lectures. Rabbi Dr. Katz has over 2,000 podcasts and videos available online and they continue to attract lay people and scholars alike who are drawn to his broad spectrum of insights into Jewish thought, humor, Torah, and Jewish history.

Class 2: 9:30-10:25 - Chana Slavaticki
Monarchy and Mutiny: Power and Politics in Kings I
Discover the high-stakes political intrigue and profound moral struggles in Melachim Aleph (Kings I). We will chart the rise and fall of ancient Israel, beginning with the height of King Solomon’s reign and his profound wisdom. We will then examine the short-sighted vision of King Rehoboam, whose choices triggered a catastrophic national split and the rise of King Jeroboam. Finally, we will confront the notorious tyranny of Ahab and Jezebel, and the fearless Prophet Elijah who stood against them as an agent of divine justice. Through close textual analysis, this course dives beneath the surface to extract the core values that guided—and misguided—these ancient leaders.
