The culmination of a BT education is the senior class educational seminar in Israel and Poland. Seniors bear witness to the devastating impact of the Holocaust in Europe and experience the exhilarating modern miracle of the State of Israel. Together, students and their educators forge powerful bonds to their heritage and to each other as they explore the history, culture, archaeology, geography, and people that unite us.
We began yesterday touring Safed, learning how 36 Israeli Defense Force soldiers protected it during the War of Independence, basically preserving the holy city and the centuries of Jewish history in it.
Our kids went to Birkenau where Danny, our guide, addressed our students prior to entering the camp and from the students a quote “I have never felt as deep a connection to my roots as right this moment.”
Today was an amazing day that tested all emotional capabilities. The village of Tarnow was the first stop of the day. Beginning in the Town Square our kids stood on the spot where hundreds of thousands of Jews were rounded up from Central Poland only to be brought to be murdered by Germans taking firing squad practice from the rooftops.
I got a note from Dr. Lasson which said: Today we began by waking up early which is always a thrill for teenagers! (Think he was being sarcastic?) We davened Shacharit at the hotel and headed off for Majdanek....
It is May 1 and I’ve just received a text message from Dr. Lasson who sends greetings from Warsaw. They were then on their way to Lublin. Suffice it to say, the kids are all exhausted – but very energized.
