In Tribute to Mr. Aharon Dahan, Z”L: A Teacher to Us All

As the congregants arrived, students watched as an eclectic range of affiliates and friends worked their way through the crowd. From young family members to Chassidic Jewish men garbed in black hats and full-length coats, a diverse cluster of people settled in their seats and listened with conviction as Mrs. Schorr and Rabbi Wohlberg eulogized their beloved friend and partner.

“I think it symbolized how many people he managed to touch throughout his life,” commented Beth Tfiloh junior Morgan M. ’14. “The differences among the crowd reflect how far-reaching his impact was.”

Indeed, Mr. Dahan’s influence extends not only within the Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School and synagogue community, but also throughout the state of Israel, where he contributed a generous sum to the prestigious Bar Ilan University, the country’s second largest educational institution.

“He believed in education,” his son shared in The Baltimore Sun. According to Mrs. Schorr, “Dahan’s mission in life was to help as many people as possible receive a Jewish education because he believed education was the key to sustaining a Jewish way of life.” This enthusiasm for Jewish learning led to the establishment of Baltimore’s first and only Jewish co-educational high school twenty-five years ago, from where more than one thousand students have graduated since.

"With his most generous heart, he was the embodiment of menschlichkeit and man's humanity toward man,” said Moshe Kaveh, the president of Bar Ilan University. “I feel a great sense of personal loss, but I am comforted by the fact that future generations will continue to be touched by [Mr. Dahan] and his dream of providing them with an outstanding education."
Although the students and faculty only attended a brief portion of the funeral, its impression proves lasting.

“I think it was really important for us to go to his funeral,” reflected sophomore Aly C. ’15. “Even though none of us had him as a teacher, we all feel as if we’re his students. We’re truly blessed to have been affected by him.”

Beth Tfiloh Dahan students will forevermore dedicate their learning to the truly blessed memory of Mr. Haron Dahan, a man whose candle burned out long before his legend ever will.
