Lilmod U'Lelamed: An Evening of Learning in Memory of Sandy Vogel z"l

Join us as we honor the legacy of Torah study in the merit of Sandy Vogel z"l with an evening of lively Beit midrash-style learning.

Topic: How Did Chanukah Become a Jewish Holiday?
Chanukah is the only holiday that commemorates an event which most Jews did not personally witness. How then was it established as a holiday to be observed by all Jews? This lecture will explore the earliest Jewish sources which mention Chanukah: letters written by Jews in the Land of Israel to Jews living in Egypt, asking them to observe the holiday. These and other ancient letters clarify how Chanukah became a holiday widely observed by all Jews - and in the process a flashpoint of debate regarding the meaning of the diaspora.
