Topic: How Did Chanukah Become a Jewish Holiday?
Chanukah is the only holiday that commemorates an event which most Jews did not personally witness. How then was it established as a holiday to be observed by all Jews? This lecture will explore the earliest Jewish sources which mention Chanukah: letters written by Jews in the Land of Israel to Jews living in Egypt, asking them to observe the holiday. These and other ancient letters clarify how Chanukah became a holiday widely observed by all Jews - and in the process a flashpoint of debate regarding the meaning of the diaspora.

Dr. Malka Z. Simkovich is the Editor-in-Chief of the Jewish Publication Society and Visiting Professor at Yeshiva University's Revel Graduate School for Jewish Studies.
