Wishing to accommodate the busy schedule of many students, the athletic department has decided to offer a new fitness program. For the next nine weeks, high school girls will meet every Monday and Wednesday for yoga and Zumba sessions. Held in either the Zimmerman gym or the High School dance studio, these courses not only expose the students to alternative forms of exercise but also provide an enjoyable way to end their day.
Expressing their approval, participants shared positive feedback about the initial classes. Helyn S. 15’ stated that since she usually must exercise on her own, she enjoyed the “ability to engage in physical activity with [girls] her own age.” In addition to their enthusiasm for exercise, students conveyed their appreciation for the chance to alleviate stress. While yoga provided them with a more relaxed venue for stress removal, Zumba allowed them to channel their energy into a vigorous routine. Maia W. ’12 called her first Zumba experience “exhilarating,” and mentioned that the “upbeat music puts you in a great mood.”
Everyone expressed their gratitude to Coach Dougherty for initiating the program and providing them with this opportunity. She hopes to expand the program to offer separate fitness classes for boys, too. "For our first session, we opened it up for girls due to their increased interest in the fitness classes available," says Coach Dougherty. "My hope for the future is to have a number of classes after school available for both the girls and boys."
