BETH TFILOH CONGREGATION is the largest Modern Orthodox synagogue in America, with close to 1,300 members representing a wide range of religious observance. Beth Tfiloh, now marking its 100th year, celebrates the joy and love of Judaism within a caring community that strives to nurture every Jewish soul and embrace Jews from all levels of observance. Serving as a vibrant hub of the Baltimore Jewish community, Beth Tfiloh has a rich offering of religious services, classes and year-round Jewish programming for children, families, young adults and seniors.

Our programming includes an extensive calendar of youth and family programs offered through our Youth Center, ongoing adult education classes through our programming center and the Mercaz Dahan Center for Jewish Life and Learning and BT Camps, one of the area’s most popular summer day camps on its own 40-acre campsite.

BETH TFILOH DAHAN COMMUNITY SCHOOL is recognized as one of the top college preparatory Jewish day schools in the country. Offering a complete continuum of education from PreSchool through High School, our school embraces families from all branches of Judaism as part of a caring community that celebrates the joy of Judaism, emphasizes values and mutual respect, and champions each child.

Our next chazzan will be a full time, exempt position, ideally commencing at a mutually agreeable date prior to the High Holy Days in 2022. The chazzan will be an integral part of our clergy team, reporting to our senior rabbi, tending to the spiritual life of the Congregation through music and song. Hours are a combination of Shabbat, weekday business hours, evenings, weekends, and Jewish holidays.

The ideal candidate loves davening, sings with others, and inspires through music. As we enter our next 100 years, we are looking less for a chazzan in the traditional “cantorial” role, and instead are seeking a chazzan who can teach others to sing along, and uplift our Congregation through communal prayer and singing; more in the mold of a “Ba'al Tefillah.” That said, familiarity and experience with traditional nussach is a must. Our partnership with Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School provides a tremendous opportunity to inspire the next generation with Jewish music, singing, and davening. We are looking for the right person to play a key role in partnering with our dynamic team of rabbis and staff leading Beth Tfiloh into the next generation.

The chazzan’s responsibilities shall be those customarily performed by a chazzan of a Modern Orthodox congregation and shall include but not be limited to the following:

• Officiate at Shabbat services, holidays, and other services as designated by the senior rabbi including regular attendance at daily services, and serve as a leader of and religious role model for the Beth Tfiloh community.
• Be fluent and experienced in the nussach of all tefillot, including Shabbat, holidays and Yamim Noraim with an eye towards maximum communal participation.
• Visits to the sick and houses of mourning for members.
• Conduct and participate in lifecycle events of members and their families.
• Participate in clergy and staff meetings as well as meetings of the Religious Services Committee and the Board of Directors and other meetings as deemed appropriate by the senior rabbi.
• Encourage and lead us towards becoming more of an inspirational singing community.
• Develop and create musical opportunities/programs for the congregation and school.
• Opportunity to work with or lead our High School choir and related groups, working closely with our students and youth in and out of the school.
• Engage the Beth Tfiloh community in the activities of the congregation and help form connections between members and the clergy/staff as well as members with other members.
• Collaborate with clergy on programming and engagement as well as work closely with other non-clergy staff, including the director of shul operations and director of programming and engagement (among others).
• Other tasks as reasonably assigned.

• Formal musical/cantorial training or relevant experience as well as excellent singing skills and overall bimah leadership skills are required.
• Ability to play guitar and/or piano/keyboards (not on Shabbat or Yom Tov) preferred. Playing in a Jewish band and/or acapella group is a plus.
• Prior experience teaching, demonstrating the ability to educate groups of varying sizes and compositions. Experience with and passion for working with children, including proven ability to work with children to increase their enthusiasm for Judaism.
• Experience planning and implementing programming for a variety of audiences.
• A thorough understanding of the workings of a Modern Orthodox shul.
•  Ability to work as part of a team, while possessing the ability to carry out tasks without significant guidance or supervision.
• Collaborative, innovative and creative while showing a true joy and understanding of, and passion for, traditional Judaism.
• Comfortable with change and experimentation; creative and innovative.
• Technological proficiency including Microsoft Office suite of products.

Highly competitive base salary. Compensation package includes medical, retirement, disability, convention and entertainment expense, housing allowance/parsonage, tuition reduction for School, membership in the congregation, High Holy Day seats and more.
