Lower School at BT is a joyful place.

From Kindergarten through fourth grade, children flourish in an environment charged with the excitement of discovery and the obvious and genuine passion we have for teaching them. Together we celebrate our American Jewish heritage.

Faculty and staff are dedicated to helping every one of our children succeed in our challenging dual curriculum. Under their guidance, students acquire the intellectual skills, the confidence to take thoughtful risks, the love of learning, and the strength of character they need to be successful when they move on to Middle School.

The BT Lower School experience incorporates several important elements:

List of 6 items.

  • A flexible program to meet each child’s needs

The Lower School’s goal is to ensure that all students fulfill their potential and are proud of their achievements—academically, physically, and socially/emotionally. Recognizing that no two children learn in exactly the same way, our teachers employ a variety of instructional strategies in a flexible program providing enrichment and/or additional support, where needed.
  • Lessons for life

Hebrew language, Judaic Studies, love for Klal Yisrael (the Jewish people) and Eretz Yisrael (the land and people of Israel) are essential elements of the curriculum.

    Hebrew language

Children learn modern Hebrew, both written and oral, using the latest technology as part of a multi-sensory approach.

    Judaic Studies
Our program begins by teaching our children a love of Judaism. They participate in Shabbat and holiday celebrations, Prayer, and Torah study. They learn to read Hebrew, study laws and customs and learn by reading authentic Hebrew texts and commentary. It is a rigorous program with Jewish values, love and joy at its core.

Klal Yisrael -- Love and Respect for Others
In keeping with our mission to embrace Klal Yisrael, all faculty members serve as role models for our students. BT children develop a deep appreciation of and respect for teachers and fellow students who live differently from them, as reflected in the concept of B’Tzelem Elokim: that each individual is created in the image of God and is therefore deserving of compassion and respect. Lower School students participate in a variety of tikkun olam projects to develop their social consciousness, environmental awareness, and responsibility to make the world a better place.

Eretz Yisrael -- Love for Israel

Central to our common heritage is our indelible connection to Eretz Yisrael, the land and people of Israel. From their earliest days at BT, children learn about Israel and its place in Jewish tradition and history, culminating in their Senior Trip to Poland and Israel.
  • Technology and a strong emphasis on STEM

Lower School students benefit from the integration of technology throughout both their general and Judaic studies curricula. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is a highlight of the school- wide curriculum.
  • Social and emotional learning

We ensure that the academic, social, emotional and behavioral wellbeing of each child is being addressed and fostered. The development of character skills, including resilience, self-control, self-regulation, empathy, assertion and creative problem-solving are at the heart of the Lower School experience.
To this end, the Lower School Guidance Counselor oversees the implementation of the Responsive Classroom approach in our classrooms, which seeks to emphasize that social, emotional, and academic learning are all proactively taught within our classrooms.
  • A partnership with parents

Effective communication between the school and parents is a BT priority. Faculty care deeply about their students and are available to them, whether during class time or after-school hours. We regularly inform parents about the ongoing educational program as well as concerns regarding individual students, with periodic formal assessments, informal notes, and calls as needed.
  • Extra-curricular programs and activities

Our students are encouraged to be well-rounded and to cultivate their talents and interests in a wide range of disciplines. From the art studio to the science lab, from the gymnasium to the theater, from the library to the computer lab, they create, discover, and grow in body, mind, and spirit. BT is committed to helping every school family find joy and meaning in Judaism. The Beth Tfiloh Youth Center offers a comprehensive after-school program for children to enhance learning, celebrate Shabbat and holidays, and foster friendships. Classes and clubs include chess, sports, lego engineering, karate, gymnastics, dance, and more.
