Interview with Max Cardin ‘11

Max Cardin '11 was one of 4 panelists who spoke to the BT senior class, kicking off alumni weekend. They addressed anti-semitism on college campuses, and prepared our students for this alarming trend.

BT: What was the best piece of advice you left with our BT seniors?

Max: I told the seniors that supporting Israel on college campuses today does not happen accidentally, but requires discipline, commitment, and bravery. Although I shared a few anecdotes about anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism at The George Washington University, I focused my comments around the proposition that certain skills can neutralize a variety of challenging situations. When confronted with a prejudiced teacher or a hateful student organization, students need to overcome any urges to leave the situation but instead stay and listen. Only once aware of the offensive conduct can one work effectively to fix it.
This ability to listen requires an immense amount of patience, but provides the foundation for long-term success. Strong advocacy also requires a commitment to self-improvement. Issues facing Israel change frequently and advocates must remain knowledgeable about Israel in particular and the world in general.

BT: What makes you passionate about Israel Advocacy?

Max: Because Judaism is at the core of my identity, I possess a deep commitment towards Israel, the homeland of the Jewish people.  As a man who values freedom, equality, and tolerance Israel exhibits those values under pressing circumstances and serves as a beacon of hope in a region rocked by violence and political instability. Fortunate of the blessings from my family, friends, and teachers I feel a responsibility to repay that debt through helping those that cannot yet help themselves. The Ethics of Our Fathers teaches us that “You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it”.

BT: How’s it feel coming back to BT?

Max: I was truly surprised to be invited to speak to the Beth Tfiloh seniors. My time at Beth Tfiloh lacked either academic excellence or athletic success. Some people turn out differently than expected. Regardless of my achievements from K-12, I felt comfortable returning to Beth Tfiloh.  I am impressed by the rigorous learning environment and stellar character of the institution, and expect my connection with Beth Tfiloh to only strengthen in the future.
