Meet the Schmerling Family

Daniel Schmerling’s BT connection goes back to high school, where he commuted to BT from Annapolis and graduated in 2004. His wife, Jen, fell in love with BT more recently while attending Mommy and Me classes with their twin daughters, Amelia ’33 and Gabby ’33. The family joined BT synagogue last spring.

Dan, an industrial and organizational psychologist at Capital One, still plays basketball twice a week with his fellow BT alumni. Jen, a lower school learning specialist at Gilman School, is pursuing a doctorate at George Washington University, researching educational policy and administration. When not at BT, the Schmerling family loves spending time together outdoors — everything from day trips to local parks to weekend beach trips.
The Schmerling twins (who actually have different birthdays—August 31st and September 1st) kicked off their first day at BT PreSchool’s 2’s program with a birthday celebration, decorating party hats and blowers. “They LOVE the BT playground, Shabbat with their friends, Morah Cindy, and all the games and crafts in their classroom,” says Jen.

Last year, Dan’s high school friends Vicki ‘05 and Jesse ’04 Hervitz invited the Schmerlings to join them at BT’s Cookie Minyan, a Shabbat service designed specifically for infants through 3 year-olds. “Our girls loved playing with their friends, singing Shabbat songs, and holding plush Torahs,” Jen shares. Since then, they’ve started participating in more BT children’s programming, including Cookie Minyan Shabbat lunches and PreSchool pre-Shabbat dinners.

We warmly welcome Dan, Jen, Amelia and Gabby to the BT family.
