Fifth Grade Advisors Help Students Make the Move to Middle School

“Advisors are trouble shooters, problem solvers, and, above all, good listeners for the students in each grade!” explains Mr. Stevens, adding that each Middle School grade has a pair of assigned advisors to provide the same level of support to the students.

“It’s a wonderful journey from Lower School to Middle School, a period of tremendous growth,” says Middle School Principal Rabbi Yehuda Oratz. “Our advisors do an outstanding job of making that journey a positive, safe and fulfilling experience, all in the context of our shared Jewish values.”

Middle Schoolers on the Move
“One of the big differences between Lower and Middle School is the amount of movement for the students,” says Mrs. Agronin. “In Middle School they change classes about every 45 minutes. This means students need to be organized and prepared for each class. In addition, they must learn to use lockers with combination locks,” she adds.

Beyond academics, Middle School students have many more choices when it comes to activities than they did in Lower School. Examples include CAPE (Creative Arts and Physical Education) electives and after-school clubs like newspaper, robotics, and sports clinics.

Getting Everyone Off to a Good Start
The transition process starts right at Middle School orientation, where students receive their new schedules, locker assignments, and locker combinations. In addition, all students receive a planner to keep track of their homework, tests, and other assignments.

During the weekly fifth grade advisory period, Mrs. Agronin and Mr. Stevens offer students clarity on any questions they may have, while providing study skills and organization guidance to ensure their success. “We are both advisors for the entire grade and are always available to talk to students about issues that may come up and assist in resolving them,” says Mr. Stevens.

For students who are just joining the Beth Tfiloh family in fifth grade, Mrs. Agronin and Mr. Stevens offer additional support to ensure that the entire family acclimates to their new community. The advisors not only keep tabs on the new students, but reach out to their parents each month to ensure a smooth transition.

Words of Wisdom
Whether BT newbies or veterans, Mr. Stevens and Mrs. Agronin encourage all incoming fifth graders to embrace this new phase of their lives.

“We know that everyone is nervous when they first come in and start middle school,” says Mrs. Agronin. But that nervousness quickly dissipates as students learn to enjoy their newfound responsibilities, privileges and ability to make choices.

Adds Mr. Stevens, “It is a VERY exciting time in your life, so enjoy it!”
